The Seasons of Kakadu

Gudjewg: Monsoon Storm (December-March)
  • Waterfalls thunder and creeks flow
  • Spear grass grows quickly
  • Frilled lizards fight for territory
  • When the rain stops, the country sparkles

Banggerreng: Knock’em down storm season (April)

  • The last of the big storms flatten the spear grass
  • Harvest time begins
  • Butterflies fill the forest
  • Brolga raise their chicks
  • Lotus lilies fill the air with perfume

Yegge: Cooler but still humid season (May–June)

  • Birds sing in early morning in the paperbark forests
  • Lemon-bellied fly catchers, yellow orioles in the chorus
  • Bee-eaters swoop onto passing dragonflies

Wurrgeng: Cold weather season (June-August)

  • Pleasant temperatures and clear skies
  • The smell of Grevillea flowers fill the air
  • Rock-wallabies enjoy the first sunlight of the early morning
  • From the shore, you might see pilot whales

Gurrung: Hot dry weather season (August-October)

  • Animals hide from the extreme of light and heat
  • Plants shed their leaves
  • Forest trees produce their flowers and fruits

Gunumeleng: Pre monsoon storm season (October-December)

  • Birds head for the last remaining water
  • The first rains hit
  • The cycle is completed
Everything is green again, almost overnight
