Project 3 - 'Domus' model photographs






These are some photo's of the model which Sam, David and myself, Mosman 6, constructed for the project Domus.

Overall, I enjoyed the project and appreciated the final result more than any other poject this semester. The final design, which was based upon having many horizonatal axis' to seperate the different spaces in an order of importance, function and usage worked well. The question of how to make a house able to resist the climatic pressures of the Kakadu rainforest was resolved through the use of stilts, an open floor plan, high roofs, extending balconies and as much open space as we could justifiably create.

In this week, I attempted to further first concept drawing I had. The roof system was again utilized whereby the air can be let into the house through a system of louvres as this will promote airflow throughout the house. I attempted to layout the floorplan so that it was as open as it could be, with the use of sliding shudder doors and different levels which were put into the house. The levels of the house may be governed by the site, which has been suggested to add onto the different levels of the site.


During the development stage, I attempted to create three designs of which could adapt to the hot humid climate that the house would be placed in. In all three designs, I have attempted to allow airflow through the house to cool it. Thus systems such as stilts, louvres, sliding shudders and a roof system whereby air can be let into the house from above have been utilised. I also attempted to keep an open floorplan in each concept to maximise the airflow inside the house allowed by these systems.

Electricity – Remote area power system. Photovoltaic solar panels placed in a North facing area, they generate DC electricity from the sun’s rays. In conjunction with a wind generator to complement this, as well as a diesel generator for back-up. All power is sent through a regulator and stored in a bank of long-life, deep-cycle, low-maintenance batteries. When power is required it is drawn from the batteries through an inverter which transforms it into 240V AC electricity, identical to the power that is received through the electricity mains.

Water – Water can be drawn from the existing bore, and rainwater will also be collected from the roof into a large tank. The water will be purified using an Aviva Pure (or similar) water desalination unit, as bore water can be quite salty and dirty. A solar water pump will be used to bring this water into the house. A roof mounted solar hot water system will be used to heat the water.

Sewerage – Underground septic tanks will be used to manage waste product from the house.

Procect 2 Minimal








This was my final submissions for Project 2, 'Minimal'.

My design was to allow relocatability through utilising materials which were lightweight and easy to install. The idea of two triangles created and put on different horizontal axis was to sepperate the space between work space and sleeping space without the use of a door while still allowing easy movability in a small space. Pieces within the bedroom are designed in a minimalist approach, such as the bed/desk chair in one, and low shower wall to allow for a common sink between the bathroom and cooking space.

I thought i should put up the 1st project of the year, 'Minimal'.

Overall I thought that the project was a useful one, however didn't really get into the assignment 100%. Thus although i was happy with my final ideas felt that the presentation wasn't quite my best work.

Mosman 1 Tute Minutes 4/05/07

M1, Week 2, Jayden Peacock




Though the development of sketches I have continued on one of my previous ideas. i continued to work with heights of rooms, ventilation, and underground rooms. The living room is the tall room in the center though the actual floor of the room in underground. This along with Think walls allow for maximum insulation through thermal mass and having the roof extra high to allow cool air to sit around head height. The idea behind the rest of the design is have all the othere rooms coming off the living usesing is termal mass and through ventilation allowning the air to flow through into the living space and out through roof vents.


I then drew up my idea in Revit for design clarity.

The Seasons of Kakadu

Gudjewg: Monsoon Storm (December-March)
  • Waterfalls thunder and creeks flow
  • Spear grass grows quickly
  • Frilled lizards fight for territory
  • When the rain stops, the country sparkles

Banggerreng: Knock’em down storm season (April)

  • The last of the big storms flatten the spear grass
  • Harvest time begins
  • Butterflies fill the forest
  • Brolga raise their chicks
  • Lotus lilies fill the air with perfume

Yegge: Cooler but still humid season (May–June)

  • Birds sing in early morning in the paperbark forests
  • Lemon-bellied fly catchers, yellow orioles in the chorus
  • Bee-eaters swoop onto passing dragonflies

Wurrgeng: Cold weather season (June-August)

  • Pleasant temperatures and clear skies
  • The smell of Grevillea flowers fill the air
  • Rock-wallabies enjoy the first sunlight of the early morning

Gurrung: Hot dry weather season (August-October)

  • Animals hide from the extreme of light and heat
